Bike Hero Rwanda
Qualifying Bike Mechanics in Rwanda.
Our Aim
Rwanda is a country of cycling. Cycling makes up a considerable part of daily life.
We love Rwanda and cycling.
We want to support education and cycling in a fascinating country and make a significant contribution here. Our main aim is to set up a regular qualification program for bike-mechanics.
We want to find and support young talents who are being trained as bike-mechanics. An intensive training programme should create sustainable jobs and put cycling on a broader footing.
Tugende: Main hub for training
Tugende is where cyclists find their home in Rwanda. The experienced mechanics are at the heart of the qualification campaign. Their expertise will be used to qualify further bike mechanics. The aim is for them to find a regular job in Rwanda or start an apprenticeship in Germany.
We need support!
The more young people we reach, the more sustainable jobs will be created. And cycling, with all its positive aspects, will retain its importance as a means of transport and a way of life.
We are looking for companies that want to support us with material, bikes, spare parts or even money. The development of a training curriculum adapted to local conditions is a major milestone, job offers will be sought - also in Germany.
Training Programm
Recruiting interested young people, e.g. bicycle taxi drivers, who are looking for a future and training beyond driving bicycle taxis.
This recruitment is organized through local, repeated workshops in Rwanda (4 local destinations). Mobile workshops are used to train young people on site invited by local partners (cycling teams, clubs, schools, universities). The workshops offer very basic training (How do I repair a flat tire? How do I fix a broken brake?).
These workshops aim to reach as many young people as possible and to interest them in working as a bike mechanic. These young people then form the basis for further and longer training courses, which are to follow in 2025.
Impact
Rwanda just recently unveiled the 2nd National Strategy for Transformation (NST2), built on five priorities areas of development. Among the key focus areas such as job creation, quality of education, reduced stunting & malnutrition, and enhanced public service delivery, there are targets, where our project perfectly fits and creates impact:
Jobs for All: the project shall create decent jobs, including opportunities for youth and women, empowering Rwandans to build a better future for themselves and their families.
Setting Solid Foundations for Education: the curricula will support the new TVET centers of excellence to bridge the skills gap, providing Rwandans with the tools they need to secure jobs in the cycling industry
Embracing Partnerships: the project should help to strengthening economic diplomacy and international cooperation. e.g. on supply chain and import of more eBikes
How to get Involved
The project is co-funded by the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GIZ. The funding requires private counter-financing.
If the project is to have a lasting impact, a certain scope and scale is required. Therefore, any material help is important, but also, for example, a contribution to the training and curricula development of young people or to external employment.
Only together can we develop cycling more sustainably in Rwanda and broaden the base.
Get in touch with us. The 2025 World Championships in Kigali alone guarantee a great deal of attention, and we would like to utilise this window of opportunity together with sponsors.
